Dear Friend of the West Chester University Library,
This letter is to notify you of an exciting event that will take place in the Philips Autograph Library at West Chester University - 7:30 pm on Friday, December 14, 2007—please save-the-date.
Noted local artist Karl J. Kuerner will talk about his work and sign copies of a new book, All in a Day’s Work from Heritage to Artist: The Art of Karl J. Kuerner. Mr. Kuerner was tutored by Carolyn Wyeth and mentored by Andrew Wyeth. He still lives at the farm of his father and grandfather in Chadds Ford. The farm is featured in many of his paintings, and the farm and his grandparents appear frequently in many paintings by Andrew Wyeth. Mr. Kuerner’s work has won the acclaim of his peers and has been widely exhibited. Many of Kuerner’s prints will be available for purchase and signature.
The event will also highlight some new acquisitions of the West Chester University Libraries appropriate to the holiday season. Among these will be a new addition to the Perrone Night Before Christmas Collection, an illustrated edition of The Night Before Christmas, one of 275 copies autographed by the famous English illustrator Arthur Rackham, and Santa Claus’s draft card. This latter is not a hoax, but was donated to the library by noted historian and West Chester University graduate, Dr. Stanley Weintraub.
There have been many exciting developments in the last year. These include the opening of the Presser Music Library in the new Swope School of Music Building; the renovation of the Reference Area in the FHG Library; and the opening of the QVC Information Commons and its expansion to include 20 computer workstations. Construction on a Starbucks, including an extended-hours study area, has begun on the first floor of the FHG Library. We anticipate opening the new facility at the beginning of the Spring Semester in January 2008, and at the same time we anticipate opening a new group study room as part of the QVC Information Commons in the room currently serving as the Java City Coffee Café.
Please help us continue the level of excellence our students have come to expect. Membership in the Friends of the Library and contributions to the Friends of the Library Fund entitles you to:
Ø Use of the library during its day and evening hours on weekdays and weekends;
Ø WCU book borrowing privileges; and
Ø Invitations to Friends of the WCU Library meetings and events.
The library is also currently raising funds to purchase new microform reader printers. I hope you will consider contributing to this effort as well.
I appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely yours,
Richard (Dick) Swain
Director of Library Services
